NSW Juniors 7s State Champs/State Gala – Wrap
Congratulations to all our players who superbly represented Norths Juniors at the NSWJRU 7s State Champs held in Mudgee during the 1st week of the school holidays. They should be extremely proud of how they performed on and off the field. Thank you to our team officials, volunteers, supporters, players & committee for all your hard work and support, along with NSW Junior Rugby, Mudgee Wombats and Mudgee Regional Council – the Glen Willows Sporting Complex is a special venue.
Our U11s and U13s kicked off their 2 day tournament on Sunday 28 September and put in some great efforts.
U11s – a mix of U10s and U11s playing together in a strong effort winning 4 of their 7 games played, with the highlights including a big couple of wins against Central North and a gutsy win over Penrith.
U13s – despite the challenges of a tough draw & a few players unavailable, the boys turned up for each game and made a real fist of the strong opposition. With a couple of speedsters on the wing, the game plan was always going to be to shift the ball wide. Unfortunately, a couple of close games didn’t fall as hoped and the team finished 12th.
The U15s and U17s arrived on Monday 29 September afternoon for 2.5 days of 7s rugby. The support for each other was evident from the first game across both age groups with both teams watching each other rip in against different Districts as they put on quality 7s rugby. After 2 days & 4 games each, both the U15s and U17s were undefeated and looked strong heading into the finals despite a couple of unlucky injuries in both age groups.
U15s – made it into the semi finals with a strong win over Hunter Wildfires before the U17s joined them with a good win over Central North. The U15s then played Mid-North Coast and unfortunately lost on the last play of the game, going down 24-19. This saw them move into the 3 v 4 play-off vs Easts. Easts proved too strong for our boys who ran out of gas in their last game of the tournament. Our U15s finished a very respectable 4th.
U17s went into their semi final as a clear top 2 team in the tournament, along with their opposition, Gordon. While we battled hard and put up a good fight, Gordon proved too strong in the end. Our players had no interest in finishing the tournament with a loss and went into the 3 v 4 play-off with intent against Warringah. The boys played great and kept the Rats scoreless to secure a 26-0 win and 3rd place.
Following the 7s State Cup, a number of our U15s & U17s players were named in the NSW 7s squads for further trials & final selection. We wish them well as they continue their rugby development journey and encourage everyone to keep working hard to achieve their potential. Remember the sun and the moon shine at different times.
